The National Museum of Romanian History (MNIR) was founded in 1970 and soon became the first and most important historical and archaeological museum in the country.
The most well-known thesaurus in Romania, especially those made by precious metals, are conserved and exhibited in the museum, together
with other very valuable archaeological and historical artifacts, representative for the Romanian history.
The museum is nowadays very open to the world as it results from the high number of temporary exhibitions (hosted and organized), scientific conferences and participation in research projects. Every year, archaeological research is developed in at least ten different sites, emphasis being on preventive archeology; the museum is or was involved in the most important national projects on preventive archaeology: Alburnus Major (Rosia Montana) and The Highway Program (Programul Autostrada). Department of MNIR, the Centre of Research and Scientific Investigation (former National Research Institute for Conservation and Restoration, INCCR) studies materials in museum objects by the use of modern physico-chemical techniques. Research is aimed to understand materials composition and techniques, to evaluate damage assessment and finally contribute to the objects preservation and conservation. Analysis may also enrich the existing knowledge on the objects history including dating, provenience and authentication. CCIS is and has been part in several national and international research projects on various subjects: evaluation of degradation level in collagen based materials, characterization and identification of natural dyes in museum textiles, analytical discrimination between Romanian and Baltic amber, elemental characterization of precious artifacts etc.
